The Kindle Scribe is a $499.99 e-reader with an 11 inch glare-free screen you can write on, and the Premium Pen is in the box. Buy it if you read long PDFs and mark them up.
If you only read novels, the $199.99 Paperwhite does that job for 300 dollars less and weighs half as much.
What $499.99 actually buys you
Amazon lists the newest Scribe at 189 x 245 x 5.4 mm and 400 g. That is thinner than a Paperwhite but nearly twice the weight, because the panel is much larger.
The screen is 300 ppi with 16-level grayscale, an adjustable warm light, and an auto-adjusting front light sensor. Storage is 32 GB or 64 GB, and Amazon is honest about the usable figure: 23 GB and 52 GB respectively.

The box holds the Scribe, the Premium Pen, a USB-C cable and replacement pen tips. It does not hold a power adapter, and Amazon quotes the sub-3-hour charge time against a 20W USB-C adapter you have to supply.
A folio cover is a separate purchase too, so budget past the sticker price if you want one.

Amazon rates both at up to 12 weeks of reading on the same test: half an hour a day, wireless off, light setting 13. Writing is what drains the Scribe, dropping it to roughly 3 weeks.
Neither model here is waterproof. If you read in the bath, you want the Paperwhite Signature Edition at $249.99, which adds IPX8, wireless charging and 32 GB.
Which Scribe to pick
There are three current Scribes. The $429.99 model drops the front light entirely and carries 16 GB, which is why Amazon quotes up to 16 weeks of reading on it.
Read in a lit room and that choice saves you 70 dollars.
The $629.99 Scribe Colorsoft adds color ink at 150 ppi, while black text stays at 300 ppi. Battery falls to 8 weeks reading and 2 weeks writing, so color costs you time on the charger as well as money.
On storage, ignore the headline number and read the usable one. It is the same trap that catches people whose iPhone storage is full while iCloud still has space. Books are tiny, scanned PDFs are not.
Who should skip it
If you want one device for everything, this is not it. The Scribe reads and writes and does nothing else, so anyone shopping for a machine that runs an IDE should read our guide to laptops for programming instead.
It also sits outside the rest of your gear. It will not talk to a smart home system, and it has no apps beyond Amazon’s own.
The library is the real reason to stay in the family. It reads the same catalogue every other Kindle does, so a Kindle Unlimited subscription carries straight over.
