Before you touch anything, work out which name you mean. If you want to rename the network your iPhone broadcasts, you rename the iPhone itself in Settings, General, About, Name.
If you want to rename the WiFi your iPhone joins at home, that name lives on the router, and you can change it from Safari without opening a laptop.
Most people searching for this want the first one and end up reading instructions for the second.
Rename your Personal Hotspot in three taps
There is no separate hotspot name field anywhere in iOS. Personal Hotspot borrows whatever your iPhone is called.
Open Settings, tap General, tap About, tap Name. Clear the field, type what you want, then hit Done. That is it.
The change is instant on your side. Laptops and tablets that already saved the old hotspot will keep showing it until they rescan, so toggle their WiFi off and on.
Change your home WiFi name from Safari
First get your router’s address. Go to Settings, WiFi, tap the small blue i beside your network, and read the Router field. It is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
Type those numbers straight into the Safari address bar. Do not search for them, or you will get results pages instead of your router.
Log in, then look for Wireless or WiFi settings. The field you want is labelled SSID or Network Name depending on the brand.

Check your ISP’s own app first
Most providers now ship an iOS app that exposes the network name directly. No gateway address, no admin password, no browser.
If yours has one installed, look under a WiFi or Network section for an edit pencil beside the name. It is genuinely quicker than the Safari route.
What breaks on the iPhone afterwards
Your iPhone remembers the old network and will keep hunting for it. Go back to Settings, WiFi, tap the i next to the old entry if it still appears, and choose Forget This Network.
Watch the band split too. If your router publishes 2.4GHz and 5GHz under separate names, renaming one moves only half your devices.
Smart plugs, bulbs and older cameras sit on 2.4GHz and store the network name internally. Each one needs re-pairing through its own app, which is the part that actually eats your afternoon.

Does renaming my iPhone change anything else?
Yes, and it is worth knowing. The device name also appears in AirDrop, Find My, Bluetooth pairing lists, and in Finder when you plug into a Mac. Pick something you are happy for other people nearby to see.
Can I change my home WiFi name without the router password?
No. Without admin access your only route is the physical reset button, which wipes every custom setting and restores the credentials printed on the router. Try those printed details before resetting, since many people never changed them.
Will a new WiFi name make my connection faster?
Not on its own. Renaming touches nothing about signal strength or bandwidth, though it can help you finally tell your two bands apart and join the right one. Real speed problems have separate fixes worth working through.
