A few months ago, Google announced the introduction of a COVID-19 layer, coloring Google Maps to reflect the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Activated from the Map Details section, the new map type uses the average of COVID infection cases reported in the last 7 days, illustrating the travel risk using a suggestive color palette. The darker the displayed color, the greater the danger. But the help offered doesn’t stop there, with Google announcing that it will include even more information on Google Maps, such as the number of cases of infection reported in different areas, from the beginning of the pandemic until now. The information will be further supported by relevant links to the websites of the local authorities and testing centers that published the data.
Another welcome addition is the real-time display of the level of congestion in public transport, whether it is a bus / tram, or subway lines. The information is corroborated in real time, counting passengers based on the Android or iOS phones they have on them.
Coming to the aid of restaurant owners and small businesses trying to continue their business in times of pandemic, Google adds a feature that allows you to track orders in real time via Google Maps. Available in countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, Brazil and India, the feature allows users to find out exactly how long they have to wait until the ordered food is delivered and even order the same dish again, saving time wasted with a new visit to the website of that business.
According to Google, “even in times of pandemic, more than 1 billion continue to use Google Maps”, the company’s goal being to bring new features and services to help overcome this difficult period more easily.
