MediaTek will launch a chipset as powerful as the Snapdragon 865, but cheaper

Although Qualcomm, ARM and Apple receive the most attention, MediaTek has a significant share of the global smartphone market, with low-cost phones powered by cheap chipsets selling much higher than the top models.

Fueled by its success so far, MediaTek continues to venture closer to the high-end segment, where the highest profits per unit sold are obtained, but keeping the affordable brand label that offers more than the competition.

The first step was taken with the integration of 5G connectivity in the range of Dimensity chipsets, making them practically overnight a credible option for fans of low-cost 5G phones, able to deliver competitive performance under the constraints of a limited budget.

MediaTek MT6893, the chipset for affordable flagships

Part of the same equation, the MediaTek MT6893 could be the next flagship chipset in the flagship-killer category, affordable enough to reach the hands of a large number of consumers, but with performance comparable to a top of the range generation last year.

Given that the software is still outdated by the hardware in terms of performance, the fact that you choose with performance at last year’s level does not matter so much, if the price paid is correct. Starting from this premise, the MT6893 chipset brings out the advantages of the 6nm manufacturing process, aiming for a level of performance normally achieved with a more complex and more expensive product chip.

According to the tests published in the Geekbench 5 catalog, MT6893 is even faster than the current top of the range Dimensity 1000+, obtaining a score of 886 points in the single-core test and 2874 points in the multi-core one. For comparison, Snapdragon 865 scores 886 and 3104 points. Although, not even at the level of parity, the difference is small enough not to matter in the day-to-day experience, if the price is good enough.

According to the same source, MediaTek MT6893 consists of an octa-core CPU with three core variants: Cortex-A78 at 3GHz, Cortex-A78 at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores optimized for efficiency. The chipset will use LPDDR5 RAM chips and UFS 3.0 storage solutions, with all the advantages for delivering top performance.
