Motorola has officially announced the Edge S, the first on the market equipped with the new Snapdragon 870 chipset. It wants to fill the gap between 5G mid-range and high-end devices, offering performance even above the level of 2020 flagships. but with a few trade-offs in points that might be less important to users who are more interested in a lower price than features they wouldn’t use anyway.

It seems that the Motorola Edge S is not a weaker Edge + model from 2020, but rather an upgrade to the standard Edge model. That one came equipped with a Snapdragon 765, and it makes the switch to a more powerful processor. Snapdragon 870 uses the same configuration from the 865, but benefits from a main core Cortex-A78 at 3.2 GHz, compared to 3.1 on the 865+ and 2.8 GHz on the standard version. It is practically a refresh, which should offer a slightly better performance, but it remains to be seen what this means for the released temperature and autonomy.
Motorola’s Edge S can be purchased in a configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of storage, and its curved screen at the edges has a diagonal of 6.7 “, Full HD + resolution on ultra-wide format, 90 Hz and uses an IPS panel. In fact, the screen has two perforations to accommodate the front cameras. The main one, wide has a resolution of 16 megapixels, and the secondary one, ultra-wide has an 8 megapixel sensor.
On the back you can see the four cameras, in a similar way to the one on iPhones. Here we find a 64 megapixel main camera that also allows video capture at 6K resolution, an ultra-wide 16 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel depth sensor. Given its presence, it is difficult to understand why there is also a 3D TOF sensor, which in theory does the same thing.
The Edge S uses a large 5,000 mAh battery with 20W charging and includes a plug-in adapter (something worth mentioning in 2021, given that large manufacturers no longer offer accessories), and integrates a 3.5 jack mm for headphones, but not a pair of headphones in the package. It is not clear if the construction of the cover is made of plastic, but it seems so, especially since, like other Motorola phones in recent times, it also has IP52 water resistance and a plastic screen protector, applied at the factory.
