Apple Car could go into production in 2024, equipped with “next level” batteries

Apple could also become a car manufacturer starting with 2024, the first Apple Car being a model with electric propulsion powered by “next level” batteries.

Launched in 2014 as Project Titan, Apple’s plan to launch a new vehicle concept is already at an advanced stage, with the US company allocating huge resources for the development of hardware and software support.

Apple’s goal of building a personal vehicle for the mass market contrasts with the ambitions of rivals such as Waymo, of Alphabet Inc., which has built driverless robotic taxis for passenger transport.

An essential element of Apple’s strategy is a new design that could “radically” reduce the cost of batteries, while increasing the autonomy of the vehicle. But the technologies for autonomous driving are not omitted either, Apple developing its own hardware / software platform.

Even for Apple, a company with deep pockets that delivers hundreds of millions of electronic products each year, assembled with parts from around the world, the manufacture of an electric car raises huge obstacles on the supply chain side. For example, despite the success displayed on media channels, Tesla needed 17 to bring the business to a profitable level.

Regarding the battery, a possible candidate would be lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. Compared to conventional Li-ion solutions, LFP batteries have a slightly lower energy storage density, but are safe to use and do not contain cobalt, a raw material that is increasingly difficult to obtain and with a negative impact on the environment. At the same time, Apple’s technologies could “radically” reduce the cost of batteries, according to sources close to the company.

The Apple Car may also have LiDAR sensors for autonomous driving orientation, similar to the latest iPhone and iPad models. It appears that Apple is working with external partners for “system elements”, including LiDAR sensors.

It remains to be seen who will assemble the first Apple car, the expectations being that the American giant will choose a partner with experience in the automotive field. Another option is for Apple to deliver only its technologies to a traditional car manufacturer.
