If your iPhone screen recording has no sound, it is almost always because the microphone was off when you started. Your voice does not record unless you turn the mic on first, and tapping the record button leaves it off by default.
The fix takes two seconds once you know where the setting hides. Here is how to get sound back.
Turn on the microphone before you record
Open Control Center. Instead of tapping the record button, press and hold it. A larger screen appears with a Microphone toggle at the bottom.
Tap Microphone so it turns red and reads On, then tap Start Recording. Now your voice and any sound around you get captured along with the video. If you need a refresher on the basics, our guide on how to screen record on iPhone walks through the whole process.
Know which sound you actually want
There are two kinds of audio, and mixing them up causes most confusion. The microphone records your voice and the room. App sound, like a game or a video, records separately.
App audio is captured automatically as long as your phone is not on silent for that app and the volume is up. So if the app itself is silent, check the volume and the ringer switch before you blame the recording.
When an app blocks the sound on purpose
Some streaming apps block internal audio to protect copyright. Netflix, Disney Plus and a few others will record a black screen or silent video no matter what you do.
This is not a bug you can fix. It is built into the app, so there is no setting that gets around it.
Still silent? Try these quick checks
Make sure the volume is up and the silent switch on the side is not flipped on. Restart your iPhone, since a quick reboot clears audio glitches that survive between recordings.
If the mic still fails everywhere, test it in Voice Memos to rule out a hardware fault. For more quick fixes like this one, browse our iPhone guides or head to the Bleebot homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPhone screen recording have no sound?
The microphone was almost certainly off. Long press the record button in Control Center, tap Microphone to turn it on, then start recording to capture your voice.
Why is there no sound when I record Netflix on my iPhone?
Streaming apps like Netflix block screen recording audio and often the video too, for copyright reasons. No setting on your phone will override that block.
Does iPhone screen recording capture app sound automatically?
Yes, in app audio records on its own as long as the volume is up and the app is not muted. Only your own voice needs the microphone switched on first.
