If you only memorize one screenshot Mac shortcut on your MacBook Air, make it Command + Shift + 5. It opens the Screenshot toolbar, and that single strip along the bottom of your display handles stills, screen recordings, timed captures, and where every file lands. The other combinations are faster for quick grabs, but this one is the only shortcut that can do all of it.
It arrived in macOS Mojave and has been standard on every Air since.
Everything sitting in that toolbar
Five buttons run left to right. Three are for stills: entire screen, selected window, selected portion. Two are for video: record entire screen, record selected portion.
Then there is Options, which is where the useful settings hide, and a Capture button on the right to fire the shot.
Whatever you picked last time stays selected. Press the shortcut twice in a row and you can repeat the same kind of capture without touching the buttons again.
Timed captures for menus that vanish
Dropdown menus close the instant you press a crosshair shortcut, which makes them almost impossible to capture the usual way.
Open Options and pick the 5-second or 10-second timer. Hit Capture, open your menu, then wait for the shutter. The menu stays open in the shot.
This also works for hover states and anything that disappears when your pointer moves.
Screen recording without installing anything
Click Record Selected Portion, drag a frame around the area you want, then click Record. Your Air captures video of just that region rather than the whole display, which keeps file sizes down.
To stop, click the small stop icon in the menu bar or press Command + Control + Escape. The result saves as a .mov file.
If you need your voice in the recording, choose a microphone under Options first. It defaults to off, which is why so many recordings come back silent.
The settings that keep your desktop clean
Under Options, the Save to list lets you send captures to Documents or a dedicated folder instead of the desktop. That one change prevents the pile-up most people fight with.
Leave Show Floating Thumbnail on. When the preview appears in the corner, you can drag it straight into a Slack message, a Mail draft or a Notes page, and nothing gets written to disk at all. Click it instead and you land in Markup for cropping and annotation.
Show Mouse Pointer is worth turning on when you are documenting steps for someone else, since the cursor is usually the thing you are pointing at.
If the toolbar does not appear
Look in System Settings, then Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts, then Screenshots. An app you installed may have taken the combination, and you can reassign it there.

On any Air running macOS Mojave or newer, yes. Older versions used the separate Grab app instead, which has since been retired.
How do you stop a recording you started from the toolbar?

Where do toolbar captures save by default?
